Vital Voices for Mental Health is a non-profit, 501(c)3 advocacy organization initially created for mental health consumers who use services provided by agencies within the Milwaukee County behavioral health system.
Everyone who works for Vital Voices is either a mental health consumer or a family member of someone with mental illness. This first-hand knowledge contributes greatly to our success as advocates because we know what it's like to have mental illness.
Vital Voices provides a safe, emotionally supportive environment that empowers consumers and encourages them to be involved in their treatment. Vital Voices becomes a spokesperson to advocate with providers to address concerns.
We conduct interviews with consumers about specific programs, such as group homes, outpatient programs, inpatient units or crisis services. The interviews seek to determine satisfaction with facilities, counseling, staff accessibility, wait times and other important issues.
The Vital Voices Helpline allows consumers or family members to call with questions or concerns regarding their care services. Our personal experience ensures callers know that we will understand their concerns and know how to get them addressed.

Each year Vital Voices surveys 500 consumers with the Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program (MHSIP) survey designed to measure consumers' perceptions of outcomes, quality, satisfaction and accessibility of their mental health services.
Since 1995, Vital Voices has surveyed participants of Milwaukee County’s Behavioral Health Division and its contracted agencies using using the nationally-recognized Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program (MHSIP) Survey. Widely regarded as the gold standard in consumer satisfaction research, the MHSIP asks individuals to rate staff, service quality, recovery plans and a host of other factors related to their experience.
